Belize – Pueblo Viejo Village

Name: Pueblo Viejo Village

Ancestry: Mopan Mayan Indian

Location:Toledo DistrictBelize, Central America

A quiet, predominantly Mopan village, this is the farthest village from Punta Gorda, and the nearest to the Guatemalan border. Its many attractions include Pueblo Viejo waterfall, high canopy rainforest, and the stunning views from the peak of a nearby mountain. Lucky visitors may meet Dr. Alfred Lau, a renowned botanist who has focused much of his work in this vicinity in recognition of the many unusual plants found in the undisturbed rainforest. Translated from Spanish to mean “OldTown”, Pueblo Viejo was the first village to be founded in Southern Belize in recent times. Just 7 miles from the Guatemalan border, it is unknown exactly when people first settled in this village. 85% of the village is Mopan, and the population is around 700.
